i shut the kiddy gate on them tho' for right now...i've been prepping for a concert this Saturday. i have been thinking about doing older music as opposed to covering more contemporary stuff...say for example, i like the song 'i can tell that we are gonna be friends.' by jack white....also covered by jack johnson. it's a fun song. it's got a great 'child-likeness' to it. but, i don't think i'll do it. why?
because i'm not sure i could 'add' anything to it...both of the other dudes' version of it are great fun. i'm not sure i'd 'bring anything to the table on that one...lots of other songs like that as well. but, when it comes to other folk tunes, or blues tunes, or hillbilly tunes, i feel like i can 'make it my own.' i wanna stay with that feeling. it lets me cover a song and still feel 'original or authentic' about it.

also, the pictures just keep getting cranked out. Jenny and i have started the collaborative blog, but i'm beginning to wonder about posting regular pictures here as well (as if i don't already). in my 'frittered' thinking, i was even considering doing another blog, but i think that is more than i can handle.
thoughts anyone?
Older music done new is a good concept for an artist like yourself. Just do what is right for you. That's what really makes a name for yourself. Not when you try to pigeonhole yourself elsewhere. You'll find your way.
ReplyDeleteI keep two blogs, one for my public life as a kindergarten teacher and one for my more private life of contemplation. It's a whole lot more work to try to keep two blogs. Most of the time I wish I had only one blog, but in my mind I have two very different audiences, so I keep them apart. But I wish I had only one.
ReplyDeleteAs for making music yours, I'm not so sure you can do anything else anyway. I say, sing a song if you feel moved to sing it and don't worry if others have done it well before. Be grateful for their contribution to the song instead.
Your efforts to sing a song will bring the music to more ears. Don't assume that your listeners have ever heard the song you're singing done better by someone else--there's a good chance that that is simply not true! It may well be their first exposure to the song.
If you love a song, sing it!
